eBook: Single Implants and their Restoration
Single implants and their restoration
In clinical situations when the implant and adjacent teeth are not aligned, an impression coping is used that will be locked into the impression by its undercuts, the impression tray must have a hole present through which the coping screw can project. The extension through the tray allows the screw to be loosened and the impression removed following polymerization. Because there is a hole or opening present in the tray, this impression has become known as an “open-tray impression” technique.

When tapered impression copings are used, the long axis of the implant and impression coping are sufficiently parallel to the natural teeth that the impression can be removed from the mouth after the impression material polymerizes. This type of impression involves a traditional type of impression tray without a hole or opening in the tray, and it has become known as a “closed-tray impression” technique.
