Dr. Marinello passed his Board examination from the University of Zurich. He spent one year as a General Dentist in a Pediatric Clinic. He served as Assistant Professor and acting head of the Dental Public Health Clinic (1977-1981) and he was Assistant Professor, Department of Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Sciences (Prof. P. Schärer) at the University of Zurich (1981-1989 ). In 1989 he fulfilled his Habilitation Thesis and became Associate Professor at the same Department. He served as a Visiting Research Professor, Department of Periodontology (Prof. J. Lindhe), at the University of Gothenburg (1989-1990), where he received his Master of Science degree in 1995. 1991-1995 he was Associate Professor (Extraordinarius ad personam) and Head of Periodontology, Department of Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology at the University of Zurich. 1995-2015 he was a full-time Professor and Chairman of the Department of Reconstructive Dentistry and Temporomandibular Disorders at the Dental School of the University of Basel. He was vice-president of the Swiss Society of Periodontology (1995-1997) and President of the Specialisation Commission of the Swiss Society of Reconstructive Dentistry (2001-2010). In 2011m he was the President of the American Prosthodontic Society (APS) and from 2016-2018 he was the President of the International Academy of Digital Dental Medecine (IADDM). Since 2000, he is the chairman of the ”1000club” (former Peter Schärer Dental Study Club). Since 2014, he is an Editorial Council Member of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.

Dr. Marinello is the author of over 150 refereed papers and he holds several memberships in professional societies: Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP); Swiss Dental Society (SSO); Swiss Society of Reconstructive Dentistry (SSRD); Swiss Society of Oral Implantology (SGI); American Academy of Restorative Dentistry (AARD); American Academy of Prosthodontics (AP); American College of Prosthodontists (ACP); American Prosthodontic Society (APS); Dental Study Club ”1000club”; International College of Prosthodontics (ICP); Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA); European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED); European Association of Osseointegration (EAO); International Academy of Digital Dental Medecine (IADDM). Since 2015 he is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Basel.

In 2003, Dr. Marinello received the Distinguished Lecturer Award by the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP) and in 2012 by the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics. In 2006, 2009 and 2011 he was awarded by the students as the teacher of the year. In 2008 he received by the Pierre Fauchard Academy the Elmer S. Best Memorial Award and in 2019 he received the Golden Medaillon Award from the American Prosthodontic Society (APS).
