The West Coast experience: The zygomatic solution

Dr. Saj Jivraj discusses the effect zygomatic implants have on treatment planning for edentulous patients. His lecture focuses on the benefits they offer by reducing additional surgeries, decreasing treatment time and therefore reducing cost. Reduced cost allows zygomatic implant treatment to be a reality for a larger number of patients. Dr. Jivraj discusses diagnosis, immediate loading, definitive restorations, and maintenance of zygomatic prostheses.

Dr. Hooman Zarinkelk brings in the viewpoint of the surgeon into how to plan and adapt a treatment plan to each patient.  Some patients can be treated with an All-on-4 approach; however, when this is not possible, zygomatic implants are a great solution.  He has specific criteria for the selection of zygoma patients, which include: full-arch immediate loading treatment, atrophic maxillae, healthy large sinuses, poor quality bone that cannot support root form implants, and patients that decline grafting procedures.

Together, specific restorative and surgical guidelines and techniques are discussed. This collaborative insight shows the importance of proper planning prior to treatment to provide the best outcome for patients.

Dr. Jivraj holds degrees from the University of Manchester, England, and the University of Southern California (USC). He is the Former Chairman Section of Fixed Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry at USC School of Dentistry. Dr. Jivraj has published numerous articles on Esthetic and Implant Dentistry and co-authored the textbook Treatment Planning in Implant Dentistry. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry the Advisory Board of Teamwork Magazine and is Ad Hoc reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry Dr. Jivraj currently holds a Faculty Position as Associate Clinical Professor at the Herman Ostrow USCSchool of Dentistry, is Honorary Clinical teacher at the Eastmann Dental Institute, London, and maintains a private practice in Oxnard, CA. limited to Prosthodontics.

Dr. Zarrinkelk received his dental degree from Loma Linda University in California. He completed his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgical residency training at Loma Linda University Medical Center. He was a clinical “Research Fellow” in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland Hospital. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a fellow of both the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Zarrinkelk is the Director of Channel Islands Dental Forum an affiliate of Seattle Study Club. He lectures both nationally and internationally on treatment protocols for severe atrophy edentulous patients. Dr. Zarrinkelk maintains a private practice with special interests in reconstructive jaw surgery and complex dental implant rehabilitation in Southern California.
