Torsten Jemt: Long-term experience of single-tooth implant restorations

The lecture gives insight in experiences with dental implant treatment in the Branemark clinic over a period of > 30 years, with over 8000 patients treated and almost 40.000 implants placed. The first developments focused on esthetics and screw joints, development of standardized clinical protocols, and premachined and individualized components for various clinical situations. Dr Jemt reviews the long-term experiences with single implant restorations and reports only low incidence on failures. The change from a machined to a medium rough implant surface (TiUnite) in 2002 reduced early implant failure rate considerably, especially in maxilla situations. Dr Jemt discusses that osseointegraion is a foreign body response with chronic inflammation, possibly leading to hypertrophic soft tissue reaction (papilla development) and over long time periods to implant infraposition.
