Torsten Jemt: 30 years implant based restorations - experiences from the university
Video highlights
- What osseointegration and a pearl oyster have in common
- General health may differ between implant patients and comparable patient groups
- Osseointegration is a time dependant foreign body response, affected both by external impact factors and host response
- Munich Symposium 2014 presentation
Dr Jemt reviews experiences with dental implants from the Brånemark clinic since 1985 till today, including 11.000 patients and 40.000 implants placed, and earlier experiences from the Gothenburg group since 1965. In their long-term follow up, the Branemark clinic team focusses on failures and tries to detect patterns and rationales. Dr Jemt reviews aspects of osseointegration and periimplantitis, and discusses potential influences of immune system, foreign body response, general health condition, and implant surface design. Implant failure may be surgery-, implant- or patient-related, future bone loss is difficult to predict based on historic information.
