Stephen Parel: Rehabilitation concepts for the edentulous patient - how many implants do we have to place
Video highlights
- How many implants to place in the treatment of the edentulous mandible and maxilla
- Review of risk patterns for implant treatment and how to overcome these risks
- In the mandible 4 implants are commonly acceptable and 3 may work well
- In the maxilla 4 implants usually work well, though may be not be enough, depending on presenting factors
- Munich symposium 2014 presentation
Scientific and clinical evidence on how many implants need to be placed, have evolved over time. 6 or more implants being the standard years ago, today 4 implants can be considered standard of care for the mandible and in most cases also for the maxilla, with the All-on 4 concept being a game changer. In the mandible even 3 implants may work well, whereas in the maxilla 4 implants may not always be sufficient, depending on presenting factors. Dr Parel discusses risk patterns for increased implant failure rates in the maxilla and presents the primary and secondary risk factors. Profiling patients for these factors, adapting the treatment plan to these individual risk factors and if needed placing more implants has considerably increased success rates in maxilla treatments in Dr Parel's practice.
