2015 is a year marking some important anniversaries in implant dentistry. 50 years ago, in 1965, the first patient was treated with a Nobel Biocare implant. 2015 also marks the 15th anniversary of the TiUnite surface, which was first introduced in 2000. In light of the significant developments in implant dentistry over these last decades, Dr. Henry presents a tour d'horizon from the early developments to future direction thoughts and reviews the achievements and scientific heritage of P.I. Brånemark, who was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Medicine. The lecture presents both scientific and clinical views on osseointegration and supported by patient treatment examples and patient experience testimonials, reviews the clinical experience ranging from single tooth implant therapy to complete maxillo-facial reconstruction. Dr. Henry gives an overview on how postgraduate implant training developed over the decades evolving from a university- and specialist-only procedure into a routine treatment option for every day practice. The TiUnite surface providing an enhanced primary stability was a significant step in the development of immediate loading protocols.
