Ole Jensen: Tissue engineering for the edentulous maxilla
Video highlights
- What a whale and Darwin's finches have in common with bone regenerative principles
- Review of tissue engineering principles
- Insights in principles of distraction osteogenesis and BMP-2 signal molecules
- New York 2013 symposium presentation
Based on the tissue engineering principle, that bone cannot only regenerate, but can take a shape and size greater than the epigenetic milieu, the lecture reviews various surgical options to increase the ridge volume with a focus on alveolar split techniques and BMP-2/ACS interpositional bone grafting. In this lecture Dr Jensen discusses evolutionary aspects of bone development in animals and humans, biologic principles of bone development, and reviews principles of genetic, biologic reparative, and phenotypic plasticity. Dr Jensen presents the Ilizarov principle and its use in osteodistraction techniques and explains the function of BMP-2 signal molecules, which like a morse code are able to give growth signals to the bone. In the second part of the lecture Dr Jensen reviews various alveolar split techniques, supported with clinical examples.
