There is a need for a critical dimension of soft tissue seal protecting the osseointegration (biological width) and a minimum width and thickness of keratinised mucosa surrounding an osseointegrated implant. The standard surgical interventions to treat these conditions need a second intervention to harvest an autologous graft with the associated increase in patient morbidity. In the last five-years different soft tissue substitutes have been tested for replacing auto grafts in these indications. In this presentation we shall review the scientific evidence behind the use of soft tissue substitutes and the key clinical trials where they have been compared with the use of auto grafts.
