Jay Malmquist: Surgical augmentation prior to implant placement. An outdated strategy?

“In spite of refinements of the surgical techniques and increased sophistication of prosthetic reconstructions, there are limits to what can be achieved with a prosthesis anchored in limited basal jawbone.” PI Branemark. 

This presentation will address the following questions: What are the positive and negative aspects of grafting versus the use of the graftless solution?  Can grafting continue to hold its place in this new world of accelerated care?  Is grafting an evidenced based solution and are grafts maintained over the long term for support of the implant fixture?

Dr. Jay P. Malmquist received a DMD degree and advanced training as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. His interest in research on bone physiology and regeneration led him to Emory University where he engaged in research protocols in the evolution of bone proteins and bone grafting techniques. He shares his knowledge in oral surgery and research as a Professor at Oregon Health Science University in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and served as an examiner on the board. He lectures nationally and internationally and has authored numerous articles and chapters in textbooks. His focus in his private practice in Portland includes bone grafting, bone regeneration and dental implant surgery.
