It has been our experience, over the last ten years, that the vast majority of patients presenting with “terminal dentition” prefer to maintain fixed “teeth”. The All-on-4® treatment concept will meet these requirements. Furthermore treatment time, costs and treatment effort is dramatically reduced compared to traditional tooth/implant supported treatment alternatives involving longer procedures like bone and sinus augmentation.
However in some patients presenting several maintainable teeth and abutments, the most acceptable treatment plan may be to preserve teeth as abutments, and add implants in order to be able to reestablish a fixed reconstruction.
On the other hand, patients presenting with partial or full edentulism seek treatment for reconstruction of their dentition with either an implant or tissue supported prosthesis. In this group, treatment alternatives to improve function and esthetics can readily be archieved with the current treatment plan concepts for the edentulous patients including all sorts of removable appliances.
This presentation will review the various tooth / implant and tissue supported options for the terminal dentition and the edentulous patient.
Prof. Hannes Wachtel received his dental degree in 1982 from the University of Tübingen, Postgraduate training in Prosthodontics at the University of Southern California, and Periodontology at Charité Berlin. He was an Associate Professor in Periodontology at the Free University of Berlin where he obtained his PhD. He is a Professor at the University of Berlin, Medicine Charité, and Clinical Professor in Periodontology at the University of Gothenburg. Prof. Wachtel is a member of numerous dental organizations and lectures internationally on periodontics, implantology and esthetics. He is author of over 100 scientifi c articles and has published chapters in textbooks. He has a private practice in Munich devoted to periodontology, implantology and restorative dentistry.
