Replacement of failed implants (functional or esthetic) can be a daunting task and often achieves unsatisfactory results. A decision on implant removal, according to set guidelines, should be made as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary tissue loss. Normal bone physiology should be respected.
It is crucial to start preparation for replacement at the time of removal. This lecture will focus on perioperative management and the protocols of soft and hard tissue used to achieve optimal long-term results in a challenging clinical scenario. Results and ongoing treatment of up to 12 years will be shown.
Dr. Louwrens Swart received his dental degree in 1986 from Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa, and his master’s degree in oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS), University of Western Cape, in 1994. He has been in private practice in Cape Town since 1995, focusing on immediate placement and, whenever possible, the immediate loading of esthetic implants. He is an honorary consultant in the department of OMFS on dental implants, as well as an honorary consultant to the Dean of UWC. He serves on the faculty of gIDE and is a member of various dental and OMFS societies. He is the current president of the Southern African Association of Osseointegration. He has lectured and published both nationally and internationally and has conducted several live dental implant surgeries. He has also served in the roles of moderator, presenter, commentator and expert panel member and has been part of Nobel Biocare World Tours in various locations around the globe. Dr Swart received merit awards for his contributions to implantology from the South African Society for Dental Implantology in 2008 and 2012. He offers a course on predictable and consistent results with immediate placement protocol as part of the Nobel Biocare international continuing education program.
