Jay Malmquist: Grafting options for the compromised implant site
Video highlights
- Bone volume is key when placing implants
- Bone graft healing is primarily determined by the degree of vascularization
- Review of grafting objectives, procedures and success principles
- Marina del Rey 2014 symposium presentation
Bone volume is the site specific determining factor in deciding on the placement of implants. The volume must be sufficient for the implant replacing the original tooth. Tooth loss and subsequent bone changes may result in inadequate bone volume for placing implants. Objectives for horizontal and vertical grafting comprise improved tissue contour and volume, optimizing the implant position in all planes and esthetic results, and improve implant predictability. Dr Malmquist is presenting the various treatment options to expand and increase alveolar bone volume for dental implants, and, highlighting with clinical treatment examples, discussing in detail onlay block graft, guided bone regeneration and bone protein augmentation procedure options. Dr Malmquist reviews the bone graft principles leading to success and concludes, that bone graft healing is primarily determined by the degree of vascularization.
